Lots of Information, But Missing Sufficient Full-Page Color Photographs That Highlight The Magnificent Sights of Alaska ...
By delicateflower152
Big and beautiful, our 49th state – Alaska – deserves a big and beautiful travel guide. In most aspects, “Fodor's Alaska (Full-color Travel Guide)” fulfills that requirement. The 500-page guide provides a wealth of information about the state’s history, its ecology and wildlife, and six different areas for exploration. Including more full-page, color photographs would have elevated this travel guide from excellent to indispensible.
“Fodor’s Alaska” presents its information in a logical, very well organized format. Beginning with a chapter titled “Experience Alaska”, the guide gives the reader background information about the state and an overview of experiences and adventures available to the traveler.
Next, a section discussing the “Ecology and Wildlife of Alaska” presents critical information about the natural wonders that make Alaska special. A map showing the different eco-zones begins the chapter. Following that, each eco-zone is briefly discussed. Then, on facing pages, four examples of flora and four examples of fauna are presented. Concluding the section and on facing pages, Fodor’s tells the reader about “Experiencing [the Ecozone]” and suggests “Top Guides” for that particular eco-zone.
Regions of the state are divided into six additional chapters – (1) “Juneau, the Inside Passage, and Southeast Alaska” (2) “Anchorage” (3) “The Kenai Peninsula and Southcentral Alaska” (4) “Denali National Park and Preserve” (5) “Fairbanks, The Yukon, and the Interior” and (6) “The Bush”. The final chapter “Alaska by Cruise Ship” added little to this travel guide and eliminating it in favor of including more photographs would have made this guide better.
The guidebook information ends with a section titled “Travel Smart” that provides the basics about “Getting There and Around”, “Essentials”, i.e. accommodations, eating out, holidays, money, packing, passports, safety, taxes, time, tipping, tours, trip insurance, and visitor information. Attached at the back of the guide, a large, folded color map of Alaska completes the book.
Intrepid travelers who explore without the benefit of guided tour groups or cruise vacations will appreciate that “Fodor’s Alaska” includes information on lodging, activities and guided tours, nightlife, and other essential information. Those who travel with a tour group or on a cruise ship may also discover sights and activities or be better able to select from the offerings of different excursions. I liked “Fodor's Alaska (Full-color Travel Guide)”, but was disappointed that more full-page photographs were not included.

Almost Too Much (But Hang In There; the Book Seems to Be Worth the Effort!)
By M. Hallisey
The photos are magnificent; the information presented rivals what you'd expect from an encyclopedia or academic treatise. You could easily spend a year reading and digesting this book. The organization is wonderful: first, the writers present an overview of Alaska. There are almost 90 pages covering various subjects designed to introduce the state: history, politics, ecological regions (rain forest, sea, mountains, ice, etc.). The next 350+ pages (and majority of book) cover the various geographic regions (Juneau region, Anchorage region, Kenai Peninsula region, the Denali region, Fairbanks and interior region, and "The Bush"). The last part of the book contains information on getting to Alaska by boat and a "Travel Smart" section (to help with trip planning). The fold-out, detachable 2-sided map is well-done and a very nice feature.
On the downside, I'm finding that this superb resource could threaten to overwhelm the reader; so much so that I could see a reader laying it aside for something simpler. That's what I find myself doing. But I'm encouraging myself (and thus would encourage the prospective reader) to hang in there. I'm finding the best approach is to read only a bit at a time and let the info percolate. I'm also finding that I'm using this book best when used in conjunction with Alaska state- and city-provided travel materials, travel websites, etc.
For a book so dense it might seem strange that I also found the book lacking in one or two respects. First, would have also liked to see some suggested travel itineraries for the first-time traveler that covered a visit to the entire state and were based on how much time available (e.g., 1-week loop, 2-week loop, 3-week loop, etc.). Maybe that is in the book, but I have yet to find it (as I said, the book is massive!). If so, my apologies.... And I guess, in fairness, I could use the very same state-provided materials (mentioned above) for this sort of thing.
Second, while the map is helpful, it doesn't quite cut it for me. I'm not looking for a level of detail found in Alaska Atlas & Gazetteer, but I wish Fodor's offered (or recommended) something a bit larger and more comprehensive.
Summary: Excellent value for the money; a virtual encyclopedia of Alaska in a conveniently-sized package. A 5-star resource. But almost too much; some very minor quibbles (minus .5 star). So let's say, 4 stars. ((One final thought (more of a disclaimer): I'm not a resident of Alaska, nor have I ever been there (though hopefully will be heading there soon) so I can't speak to the accuracy of the information provided.))

North to Alaska...
By HMS Warspite
Alaska is still one of the dream vacation destinations of Planet Earth, with its vast array of natural wonders, including mountains, glaciers, lakes, a long sea coast, and abundant wildlife. Fodor's Guide to Alaska has evolved with the times; the 2016 edition comes with a full array of color photographs, graphics, reviews, and recommendations on what to see and do, where to stay, and what to eat.
The opening chapter introduces the state's history, top experiences for visitors, and major attractions. There are chapters on Alaska's major tourist destinations: The Southeast panhandle, the city of Anchorage, Southcentral Alaska including especially the Kenai Peninsula, Denali National Park, Fairbanks and the rugged Interior of the state, and the remote Bush. The City of Anchorage and Denali National Park certainly rate their own chapters as major visitor destinations, but there is a lot to see off the major tourist routes if the traveler is willing to do the planning. A robust section is devoted to the cruise ship routes, which carry tens of thousands of visitors up from the lower 48 states each year. The guide includes lots of small maps in the text and a pull-out map at the back to help the visitor find his or her way around.
Alaska is a huge state; this Fodor's Guide is 500 pages for a reason. Alaska is also sparsely populated outside Southcentral; tourist infrastructure is limited and visitors should expect to plan ahead. Even the world-famous fishing mecca of the Kenai Peninsula has limited beds for visitors, spread out over hours of twisting roads (and astonishingly beautiful scenery).
Alaska is not to be taken for granted. The weather is highly variable, unpredictable, and even dangerous, in all seasons. Visitors will need layers of clothing (we don't mind if you buy them here). We have lots of wildlife, and visitors need to bear in mind (no pun intended) that they might not be the top of the food chain. The limited road network might indicate travel by boat, plane, snow machine or even dog sled. The Alaskan out-of-doors experience is readily accessible to the hiker, biker, skier, boater, climber, hunter, and fisherman; be smart, but get out there and do it.
"Fodor's Alaska 2016" is very highly recommended to smart visitors as a planning tool.
