The digital section only refers to MP 3 pretty much, vinyl/turntable section is minimal and not useful

Overpriced and a little dated.
The digital section only refers to MP 3 pretty much, vinyl/turntable section is minimal and not useful.
He really doesn't like center channels. I like it for dialog and just with it off in my receiver when playing music.
It's a good book but should be $15 $20 and needs some updating.
Also no kindle version. Dropping another star just for that.

Most audiophiles will have previously been aware of most of the advice in this book. That said, it is worthwhile to have a summary of tips and ideas in one place. The speaker voicing section is worthwhile as long as you have the space, are not overly concerned about room appearance/aesthetics (if the music is what really matters) and have the time and inclination to experiment.

Best money spent on in home audio bliss

This is my first review, because I believe it's advice has saved thousands in an effort to improve my sound. I don't have a zillion dollar system or any components over 1500 although most were used like the tube pre-amp, 80's amplifier, and speakers. My speakers are Dahlquist that I refurbished via Regnar, also highly recommended. I have upgraded from CD player to Apple Mini with Pure Music acting as a music server feeding an upgraded DAC, advice from Quarter Notes a quarterly e-mail update to the book. While this required an expenditure it was done primarily so my little one couldn't get any more finger prints or scratches on the CD's. As for the initial sound, well it sounded good, not great and in general I was a bit disappointed so when I stumbled across Get Better Sound and it's claim to improve my sound quality for $35 I added it to my Christmas wish list. My lovely wife figured this was easy so I got the book as a gift. The only real warning I'd have is that if the stereo is in a commonly used room WAF or wife acceptance factor may have an effect on how much the sound can be improved. Although Jim mentions many options that keep the WAF high. Luckily my wife is a music lover too and finds the non-standard arrangement to be quite acceptable.
One reviewer wrote, the book mis-represents its self claiming the improvements are free or low cost; many are though not all. In general I'd say the ones that are likely to make the biggest improvement are free save moving things around in the room. Others aren't, but they are usually to fix problems like highly reflective surfaces or relocating your equipment from the usual wrong location. Sure some sort of professional grade absorbent material might work better, but he suggests as an option putting a plant in it's place as a very low cost alternative that works nearly as well and has better WAF. I use a combination of plants and decorative Asian pillows for the job. Jim mentions the use of tube traps or bass traps to fix room nodes, not free. There are certainly professional versions of traps out there, which the book mentions, but that I'd never splurge for. Being reasonably frugal and a Jack of all, I found a DIY trap site and for less than the cost of a single trap made 10 and reap an improvement that my wife even hears and enjoys; although I put over a hundred hours into the project to obtain a professional appearance that improved the WAF. Another tip concerns electricity quality, sure you can spend many thousands on purification devices, but his suggestion, listening during a certain time of day is free.
The tech geek side of me would like a new amp with balanced cables or a better DAC. However I'm sure that only implementing the free improvements mentioned in the book, my labor in this case being, still feel that the $35 spent on Get Better Sound far outweigh the improvements they might provide. By the way if your into a video version instead of or to supplement the printed version, a 3 disc DVD version is due out by March 2011, I ordered my copy already! I'm not related, just a very happy customer. Thanks Jim!
